HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — J.T. and I began formal casting for the role of Danny, the film student at Judas Kiss‘ Keystone University who will star alongside Charlie David. Los Angeles is the first of what could be several major cities in which we’ll conduct our search for a talented young actor to fill this challenging role.

We went through more than 1,000 submissions from actors and their agents, knowing we couldn’t accommodate more than about 70 actors in auditions we held Saturday in Hollywood. Between a rare rain storm, actor flakiness and — let’s face it: fear about playing a gay role — a total of 55 actually showed up.

Following the audition, we reviewed all the video we shot (see the photo at right) and argued a lot. Naturally.

We saw quite a few great actors, and though we’re constrained by having to choose an actor with a very specific look, we were able to narrow the field to nine whom we’ll be seeing at callbacks in Los Angeles this coming Friday.

Even so, we’re still planning another set of auditions in Seattle (where we plan to shoot Judas Kiss later this year) for the role of Danny. If need be, we’re willing to go to New York, too. It’s vital that we pick an actor who can pull off this role.

We’ll keep you posted along the way!

Last week we officially started auditions for the leading role, Danny Reyes, in Judas Kiss. Thanks to Actors Access, NowCasting, LACasting, Craigslist & Jeff Gund of Infolist, we have more than 1,000 submissions! And out of those 1,000 submissions, we can only make room to see 69 actors in Los Angeles.

Leading off with an already talented and accomplished cast, we need a young unknown actor with acting chops to play opposite the exceptional Charlie David. Not only are we holding auditions in Los Angeles, but also we’ll be holding auditions in Seattle or Vancouver, and our last stop may be in New York City.

Wish us luck!

Making a movie isn’t an easy task. And for Carlos, there are plenty of tasty meals between writing assignments and production schedules. A man needs to eat!

In our newest podcast, Tim of the Future, our intern boasted about all the cool new things happening with Judas Kiss, like the new Web site and the prospectus for new investors. But none could be more pleasing to Carlos’ tummy as the recipe to White Bean Chili Gumbo.

So here’s the recipe! Enjoy a bowl while watching our podcasts. Don’t forget to let us know what you think!

Bon Appétit!

Carlos’ White Bean Chili Gumbo

Ingredients:
1 lb Chicken Andouille Sausage (Diced and grilled in olive oil)
1 cup chopped onion
1 can (or the equivalent) chicken broth
3 cloves of garlic, chopped finely
2 tsp Cumin seed (ground will not withstand long cooking as well)
1/2 tsp dried oregano leaves
2 -15oz cans white beans (great northern or cannellini), drained and rinsed
1 to 2 cups sliced okra (frozen if you can’t get it fresh)
1-2 cans of diced tomatoes (not whole tomatoes, you want to use the juice from can)
jalapeno chili peppers, fresh, jarred or canned, optional or ‘to taste’ (depending on how much heat you like!)

Preparation:
Combine all ingredients in slow-cooker and stir occasionally. (approx. 3-5 hours, depending on your schedule)
Top each serving with shredded Monterey jack cheese and or broken tortilla chips if desired.
Chili Gumbo is also great over rice.

LOS ANGELES — Rising European actor, television host and pop singer

Digital auditions via IMDb, Facebook and Skype facilitated cross-Atlantic casting

LOS ANGELES — Rising European actor, television host and pop singer Timo Descamps has been cast in the time-bending campus drama, “Judas Kiss,” the film’s producers announced today.

The 23-year-old Belgian was recognized last year by the preeminent Dutch and Belgian musical awards. Nominated in both nations, he won the Belgian award for Rising Talent. Descamps recently began a stint as a host on the Belgian VT4 channel.

UPDATE: Timo was interviewed about his role in Judas Kiss on Belgian TV. Watch here.

In “Judas Kiss,” Descamps will play Shane Lyons, an amoral college senior who will do whatever it takes to win the love of film student Danny Reyes.

“Judas Kiss” is the story of a disillusioned filmmaker’s visit to his peculiar alma mater, where he is trapped in a tug of war between his tortured past and a troubling future.

Descamps’ cross-Atlantic casting for the film was made possible by a combination of the Internet Movie Database (IMDb), Facebook and Skype, said “Judas Kiss” writer-producer Carlos Pedraza.

“I always play ‘good’ characters,” Descamps said. “I’m happy for the challenge playing someone different in an inspirational project like ‘Judas Kiss.’”

Descamps made headlines in his home country last year when he came out as gay.

WHAT IT TAKES “Timo wanted to be on this project the instant he learned about ‘Judas Kiss’ on IMDb,” Pedraza said. “We communicated via Facebook and Skype and had him shoot a screentest in the Netherlands with two scenes from the screenplay.”

The digital audition impressed “Judas Kiss” director J.T. Tepnapa, who saw an opportunity to showcase Descamps’ musical talent in the role of singer Shane Lyons.

“Timo showed us he has what it takes to play an unsavory character who has an entire campus twisted around his little finger,” Tepnapa said. “You can’t take your eyes off him.”

“Judas Kiss” is Tepnapa’s first feature film. He has won many international awards for his short films, including the multiple award-winning parody of 1950s teen health films, “Masturbation: Putting the Fun Into Self-Loving,” the comedy “Drag Queen Heist” and a drama about homeless youth, “Begging for Change.”

Descamps started acting in television at 17, starring in the Belgian soap opera “Family.” At 19, he landed a leading role in the children’s show, “Spring.” A year later, he won third place in the Belgian celebrity singing contest, “Soapstar Superstar.” On the heels of his musical success, he wrote and released his first single, “Phone Call.”

He has dubbed voices in several European versions of Hollywood blockbusters, including “Happy Feet” (Mumble), “Surf’s Up” (Cody), “The Chronicles of Narnia,” (Peter Pevensie), and has hosted a show on Europe’s Nickelodeon network called “Superstar: The Battle!”

Descamps currently stars as Dolf in the Dutch musical “Crusade in Jeans,” and plays a South African student in the Dutch TV drama, “SpangaS.” He just began hosting a kids’ show on the Belgian network VT4.

“Judas Kiss” is being produced by Blue Seraph Productions, a Los Angeles company headed by Tepnapa and Pedraza. Their previous work has been featured in the New York Times, BBC, Variety, Frontiers, Fab magazine, the Today Show, MSNBC, and other international news outlets.

The film, scheduled to shoot this summer in Seattle, has already attracted attention for casting former “Dante’s Cove” star Charlie David (host of Logo’s travel show, “Bump,” and writer-star of the film, “Mulligans). Also cast is controversial adult film star Brent Corrigan, who appeared in last year’s Oscar-winning “Milk” and the comedy, “Another Gay Sequel.”

TrekMovie.com hailed “Blood and Fire, Part 2″ as:

An emotional yet exciting story, complete with the excellent production values and effects that we have come to expect from the Phase II team.

The past year also attracted kudos for Carlos’ work from Joss Whedon, who told Rolling Stone that the Phase II episode, “World Enough and Time,” which Carlos co-executive produced, inspired Whedon to create the Internet phenomenon Dr. Horrible’s Singalong Blog.

Rolling Stone, by the way, named Phase II, among its five must-watch Web series.

“Blood and Fire” is based on a script Gerrold originally wrote for Star Trek: The Next Generation in the 1990s. It was never produced because its passing reference to a male couple aboard the Enterprise was considered too controversial by the producers.

Carlos adapted the script for the original Trek series-based Phase II, expanding the story to include Captain Kirk’s nephew Peter as one part of the male couple. Interestingly, two decades later, that portrayal proved controversial when “Blood and Fire, Part 1″ debuted a year ago.

Fortunately, Part 2’s release this past November was greeted by far fewer objections.

“Blood and Fire” was shot by Judas Kiss’s director of photography Dave Berry and second-unit director Ben Alpi, of our partner company Runic Films, with visual effects by Joël Bellucci.

Read J.T.'s account about how the Universe chipped in to assist Judas Kiss by helping us score Dante's Cove star Charlie David to star as Zachary Wells.

SOMETIMES IT’S EASY to believe the Universe conspires against you. You believe it’s you against everyone else; it’s a dog-eat-dog world, survival of the fittest. But isn’t that all a bit narrow-minded?

In the chaotic world of filmmaking, I’d say it’s much better to help each other succeed. The more you help one another, the more you can rise together instead of bringing each other down like crabs in a bucket.

For more than three years, Carlos and I have been collaborating on Judas Kiss. We are opposite sides of the same coin but we have worked together for so long it’s impossible to imagine this project without him. He has single-handedly built and rebuilt our websites, written and re-written our script, and has been a cheerleader on the days I had little to cheer about.

A year after we started out, we began working with Jody Wheeler at DoorQ Entertainment. Since then we’ve helped each other grow as companies with next to no funding. Yet surprisingly, without DoorQ.com, we may have never met our Judas Kiss star.

About six months ago, I get an email from a Charlie David who was interested in learning more about our project. What I didn’t connect right away was that Doorq.com was the connection between Charlie’s TV series and our project.

It was a great contact. Charlie David of “Dante’s Cove” and the Logo TV series “Bump!” I knew this man! And he was contacting us!

At first we discussed the possibilities of his production company, Border2Border Entertainment handling our overseas sales and distribution. Charlie is as much an accomplished businessman as he is an actor. Carlos took the high-speed ferry from Seattle to Victoria, British Columbia, to meet Charlie and his business partner, Linda Carter. Their initial conversation about sales became even more exciting when Charlie expressed interest in the lead role. What!? Really!?

A WEEK LATER, Carlos and I were in Canada having brunch with Charlie and Linda — a four-hour brunch. Of course Charlie was gracious and kind. And there is this sparkle in his eyes when he looks at you. Like his eyes hold something mysterious underneath the surface. It’s a secret every good actor never reveals. It’s something that makes him perfect for the role of Zachary Wells.

Today, we not only have the multi-talented Charlie David, but we also have his company Border2Border as co-producers of “Judas Kiss”. There is so much more to come for this project.

I learned the Universe was never conspiring against us; it’s always ready to help. We just have to listen and seize every opportunity. When you stop and look around, it’s just a lot of family, friends, and fans wishing us lots of success. So hang on! The party is just getting started.

— J.T.

LOS ANGELES — Charlie David, star of the popular series “Dante’s Cove” and the recent feature “Mulligans,” is slated to

LOS ANGELES — Charlie David, star of the popular series “Dante’s Cove” and the recent feature “Mulligans,” is slated to star in the independent film Judas Kiss, the movie’s producers announced today.

David will play the role of Zachary Wells, a washed-up filmmaker who returns to his peculiar alma mater, where he meets his younger self and gets the chance to change his troubled past so he can avoid a disturbing future.

“Judas Kiss” is the first feature film from director J.T. Tepnapa, who has won many international awards for his short films, including the multiple award-winning parody of 1950s teen health films, “Masturbation: Putting the Fun Into Self-Loving,” the comedy “Drag Queen Heist” and the drama about homeless youth, “Begging for Change.”

“I’m excited to work with such a multi-talented entertainer,” Tepnapa said. “Charlie’s experience in front of and behind the camera will add so much to “Judas Kiss’” production values.” For his part, David was attracted to the screenplay’s time-bending drama.

“I was engaged by ‘Judas Kiss” concept of altering the past and future through the choices we make right now,” he said. “Who hasn’t wondered what lies down the paths not taken in career, adventure and love?”

PLAYING ZACHARY WELLS David was also intrigued by the character of Zach. “It’s exciting and scary for me because he has such a troubled past and a present devoid of feeling and passion,” he said. “The script has emotional triggers for me – some that immediately resonated and others that honestly terrified me. Zach is going to allow me to get a little messy as an actor and it’s about time I did that.”

David also joins “Judas Kiss” as an executive producer with his production company, Border2Border Entertainment, which will also act as “Judas Kiss’” sales and distribution representative. “I am very excited to be joining this project as an actor and producer,” he said. “I love the art of telling a good story and Judas Kiss is a really good story. I’m confident our connections at Border2Border Entertainment with international distributors, broadcasters and new media ventures will help Judas Kiss find a large and lasting audience.”

“Judas Kiss” is being produced by Blue Seraph Productions, a Los Angeles company founded by Tepnapa in 2000 to create his short films. “Judas Kiss” was written by Blue Seraph partner Carlos Pedraza from Tepnapa’s story. The film is scheduled to shoot in 2010 in Seattle.Tepnapa’s and Pedraza’s work has been featured in the New York Times, BBC, Variety, Frontiers, Fab magazine, the Today Show, MSNBC, and other international news outlets.

The film has already attracted attention for casting talented and controversial adult film star Brent Corrigan, who recently appeared in this year’s Oscar-winning “Milk” and the comedy “Another Gay Movie.”

BOX OFFICE PHENOM David is also a gay box office phenomenon. His steamy supernatural soap opera, “Dante’s Cove,” is the No. 1 show for the here! television network in the United States, and the series’ DVD sales continue to be a genre leader worldwide. He also stars in the travel series Bump!, now in its fourth season, airing in more than 12 countries, with more than 50 million households in the United States alone on MTV’s sister station, Logo.

David has had three features released in the past two years: “A Four Letter Word,” “Kiss the Bride,” and “Mulligans.” David also wrote and produced the award-winning Mulligans, which has played at more than 65 international film festivals and garnered worldwide distribution.

David’s first two novels, the film novelization “Mulligans,” and “Boy Midflight,” were published in 2009. Among his many awards are the Out 100 Award (2005); Rising Star Award, Philadelphia Film Society (2007); and Best Male Actor, Festival del Sol Gran Canaria, Spain (2008).

David’s show business career began with the pop band, 4Now, and includes hosting stints on television shows on E!, NBC, Fine Living, and other networks. David’s move from his native Canada to Hollywood generated even more opportunities, including roles in Showtime’s outrageous musical, “Reefer Madness,” ABC’s “Ugly Betty” and the Sundance Channel’s award-winning series, “Terminal City.”

Disappear is not quite the right word. There’s a film term used when cutting down a script to a manageable length. It’s called Killing Your Babies.™ It refers to cutting out some of your favorite scenes, lines, and moments that you simply cannot live without. At the end of the day, you can live without it because you’ll have a leaner, cleaner and snappier story.

WITH THE HELP of twitchy fingers and plenty of red ink, our good friend and writer, Jody Wheeler helped cut the script. A line here, a line there. And suddenly, Carlos and I had cut out 12 pages!

In film terms, it means not only tighter scenes, but also a combination of fewer shooting days, more rehearsal time, and more money to go around to create a better film.

Am I happy? Yep!

Preproduction rolls merrily along with the help of Carlos’ great find of Tinychat, a free chat room and video conference website.

With me in Los Angeles, Carlos in Seattle, and our cinematographer, David Berry, in Austin, we could still go page-by-page through the script. Our goal is to create a unified vision for the look and feel of Judas Kiss.

After three production meetings, and almost twenty hours of debating, explaining, yelling, crying, laughing, and yelling some more, we are just about done with only a handful of pages left to work through.

So many productions have these same questions arise during the actual filming of a movie. I believe it’s so much more productive (and cheaper) to deal with these things now.

We’ll be going through Judas Kiss again with the intention of creating a shot list. But until then I’ll be off to Canada on a very special business trip with Carlos and some future business partners.

Stay tuned! We’ll be making some very special announcements in the weeks ahead.
