‘Judas Kiss’ Named to Top 10 List

JUDAS KISS was named to Entertainment Focus’ list of Top 10 Gay Films of 2011.

The British entertainment news site described the film as a “drama mixed with sci-fi for a unique and refreshing gay cinema experience.”

Writer Pip Ellwood compiled the list from DVD releases of gay films this year. “2011 has been a strong year for gay cinema with more quality movies being released than ever before,” he wrote.

Entertainment Focus reviewed Judas Kiss when it was released in November in the United Kingdom, calling the film ”a strong movie that tries something new in the LGBT genre. With all round good performances, an intriguing and strong storyline, and a satisfactory resolution, the movie really surprised us.”

No. 1 on The Advocate’s Hot Sheet, dot429 Magazine

IN ITS first week of release on DVD in the United States and Canada, the “bewitching Judas Kiss” made No. 1 on The Advocate’s Hot Sheet, the top 10 entertainment highlights by Brandon Voss.

Judas Kiss was the first of four “film fest faves” recently released on DVD, Voss wrote:

DVD: Judas Kiss, Unhappy Birthday, Eating Out: Drama Camp, and Gigola. Take home these LGBT film fest faves: In J.T. Tepnapa’s bewitching Judas Kiss, out Dante’s Cove star Charlie David plays a filmmaker sucked into a weird love quadrangle with gay stars Timo Descamps and Brent Corrigan; a gay couple gets a scary surprise in the British Unhappy Birthday; Q. Allan Brocka’s fourth Eating Out gets campier; and Laure Charpentier’s French-language Gigola plumbs the lesbian underbelly of ’60s Paris.

EARLY SALES Released on DVD and video on demand on October 25, Judas Kiss is at or near the top of the sales charts at many retail outlets in its category, including Amazon.com, Wolfe Video, TLA Video, Amazon.co.uk in England and Barnes & Noble, and is proving very popular on Netflix’s DVD service, as well.

VIDEO ON DEMAND Judas Kiss also became available this week on many cable and satellite systems’ video on demand service, especially the two largest cable providers, xfinity (Comcast) and Time Warner. The film also became available on Amazon Instant Video for sale and rent.

TOP 10 LIST Meanwhile, Judas Kiss also hit the top of the list of gay videos on dot429 Magazine this week. dot429 is a professional network for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community and its allies. Earlier this fall, Edge Magazine named Judas Kiss to its Top 10 Indie Movies list, and Queerty put the film at the top of its festival list back in the spring.

Montreal’s Image+Nation to Screen ‘Judas Kiss’

MONTREAL’S Image+Nation Film Festival will screen Judas Kiss on October 30 as part of the 24th annual event, which runs from October 26 to November 6.

The screening will mark the film’s third Canadian festival, following its premiere at the Vancouver Queer Film Festival in August, and at Reel Pride in Winnipeg earlier this month.

“With so many Canadian cast members, we’re thrilled to appear in Montreal,” said writer-producer Carlos Pedraza. “Even the geese in our movie are Canadian.”

Here’s how the festival describes Judas Kiss:

Director J.T. Tenapa’s ambitious first film features plenty of Canadian content, and is a beautifully framed, exquisitely lensed treat, with an engaging original score. A fantasy about second chances to get things right, Judas Kiss is a delightful brain-and-eye candy experiment offering us wish fulfilment – on many levels.

Judas Kiss is scheduled to screen at 8 p.m. on Sunday, October 30, at the Theatre Hall Concordia in Montreal. The Concordia Hall Theater features Montreal’s biggest screen in a 700-seat, newly renovated auditorium with Dolby digital sound.

The city is also home to Judas Kiss star Charlie David, who will appear at Image+Nation to represent the film. Co-star Ron Boyd, who plays film festival judge Ralph Garlington, may also appear at the festival.

French Distributor Picks Up ‘Judas Kiss’

FRENCH DISTRIBUTOR BQHL has signed on to distribute Judas Kiss on DVD throughout French-speaking Europe.

“We’re thrilled Judas Kiss is getting wider distribution in Europe, now in French,” said director J.T. Tepnapa, “and we look forward to an ongoing partnership with BQHL at film festivals, as well as pursuing other opportunities.”

The company, which runs the “boutique” site BQHL.com, also distributes books and other products to a wide variety of audiences.

Based in Paris, the media company will distribute the film on its own website, retail outlets, video on demand and other online vendors.

BQHL joins the other European distributors for Judas Kiss, TLA Releasing in the U.K. and Ireland, and Pro-Fun Media in German-speaking Europe, which are beginning distribution in November, following the North American release October 25.

BQHL has not yet announced its release date.

Chicago’s Reeling Film Fest Features ‘Judas Kiss’

CHICAGO’S REELING Film Festival, the second-oldest international GLBT fest, celebrates its 30th anniversary with a screening of Judas Kiss on Monday, November 7.

“We’re thrilled Chicago is screening the film, even after its nationwide DVD release,” said writer-producer Carlos Pedraza. “Judas Kiss looks and sounds great on a big screen, and we’re glad Chicagoans will get to see it that way.”

This year, films are featured at six different Chicago area theatres. The festival runs Thursday, November 3, through Saturday, November 12, 2011 and will include 60+ screenings.

Pedraza and actor Julia Morizawa (who plays Abbey Park) plan to attend the screening and conduct a Q&A session following.

Judas Kiss is scheduled to screen at 9:15 p.m. on November 7 at Landmark’s Century Centre Cinema, 2828 N. Clark St. in Chicago.

South Africa Premiere for ‘Judas Kiss’

THE INAUGURAL Durban Gay & Lesbian Film Festival in South Africa opens October 28 with Judas Kiss in what organizers are calling its “Pink African Premiere.”

“It has been a long time since I’ve watched a movie that involved gay characters that engaged me so increasingly,” said director Jason Fiddler in selecting the film as his festival opener.

“The high production quality, score and technical attributes underscored a very clever plot,” he added. “It is a unique story at a time when such tales are rarely told; an old theme but superbly wrought with highly digestible elements of drama, tragedy and comedy. This is why films are made.”

Judas Kiss will screen twice at the festival, which runs from October 28-November 6 at the KwaZulu-Natal Society of Arts Gallery in Durban (final schedule forthcoming).

ABOUT THE FESTIVAL Though DGLFF launches in the shadow of the country’s larger, better-known, multi-city Out in Africa Festival, Fiddler says Durban, South Africa’s third-largest city, deserves its own event.

“Internationally, most LGBTI film festivals are city-based,” he said, “and we aim to put on a festival that will have a local flavor and more closely meet the needs of the city’s pink community as well as LGBTI filmmakers.”

Judas Kiss writer-producer Carlos Pedraza said, “It’s a great honor for our film to be part of a growing gay cultural community in Durban. We look forward to being a part of this cutting-edge new festival, even from afar.”

Fiddler explained the festival will go beyond merely presenting LGBT films, reaching out to the filmmaking community with seminars, Q&A sessions and other educational events. “DGLFF will endeavor to work with experienced hands to help nurture and provide opportunity to young filmmakers,” he added, “allowing them to gain exposure, network with with producers, directors and writers and ultimately gain confidence to take flight.”

Edge Magazine: ‘Judas Kiss’ Among Fall’s ‘Great Gay Indies’

IN A COVER story for its new digital magazine, Edge named Judas Kiss among the “12 Great Gay Indies That Will (Hopefully) Make it to a Theater Near You.”

The article by Bob Nesti notes:

Come fall and the mood changes in movie theaters. Summer fluff is replaced with more serious fare. … Yet for many LGBT films just getting out in that marketplace is the battle. Nesti highlights a dozen worthy LGBT-themed efforts. Judas Kiss is No. 8. In the film’s profile, “It’s a Wondeful Life?”, Nesti quotes the review penned by the Edge Network’s Christian Cintron at this summer’s film festivals:

THE SALEM Film Festival in Oregon plans to show Judas Kiss at its sixth annual event, October 18, as part of its Northwest Emerging Artists competition.

“This festival is a great opportunity to show off the talent of our mostly Northwest-based cast and crew,” said producer and writer Carlos Pedraza, himself a Seattle resident.

“The Salem Film Festival is another chance for a mainstream audience to see the film and explore its universal themes,” added director J.T. Tepnapa.

Judas Kiss is part of the festival’s offerings, October 14-21, of “the fresh, the fantastic and the first-rate,” said festival director Loretta Miles. “We loved your film! We really are very excited about including it our fest.”

Judas Kiss screens Tuesday, October 18, at 7 p.m., Miles added. The venue will be updated on this page and on the Facebook Event Page.

ABOUT THE FESTIVAL The Salem Film Festival is a project of Salem Cinema, Allied Video Productions and the Salem Film Society, in partnership with Willamette University and Chemeketa Community College. Best Screenplay Award at Long Beach QFilms Opening Night

LONG BEACH, Calif. — Judas Kiss opened the first night of the QFilm Festival here on Friday, bringing home its jury award for Best Screenplay, Feature Film.

“This is such a great honor, and a wonderful surprise,” said writer-producer Carlos Pedraza. “I’ve not been to a festival that has presented an award like this at a film’s actual screening.”

“I can’t think of a better way to win an award like this than at a festival in the city where I was born,” said director J.T. Tepnapa, who is a former Long Beach resident.

On hand were a large number of Southern California-based Judas Kiss cast and crew, including Sean Lockhart (AKA Brent Corrigan, who plays Chris Wachowsky), visiting Belgian actor Timo Descamps (Shane Lyons) and Julia Morizawa (Abbey Park).

The film screened after the festival’s opening reception at The Long Beach Gay & Lesbian Center. The award presentation and a lively Q & A session came after the screening, followed by a raucous afterparty at the Paradise Piano Bar and Restaurant.

GREG IN HOLLYWOOD The film, its award and the two parties were featured on the popular entertainment blog, Greg in Hollywood, which said, “the film is so well shot with outstanding production values, and the cast is headed by the very talented Charlie David,” and features strong performances from its cast. About the actors on hand in Long Beach, the blog noted Descamps (“an excellent and most attractive villain”) and Lockhart (“off to a terrific start as a mainstream film actor”).

AWARD TALLY The QFilm award is the second for the Judas Kiss screenplay (FilmOut San Diego was the first), and the film’s sixth award overall. It also won Best Debut Feature for Tepnapa (Fort Worth’s QCinema); the Rising Star Award for Lockhart (Philadelphia’s QFest); First Place, Alternative Spirit, and Honorable Mention, Youth Jury (both at the Rhode Island International Film Festival).

“I’m glad we were able to share this award with so many of our cast and crew,” Pedraza said. Also attending the screening were:

THE SCIFI elements of Judas Kiss paid off for the reviewer at Gay SciFi Nerds, a cult and scifi news website based in the United Kingdom.

The apparent paradox at the heart of the film’s plot has thrown a few other reviewers for a loop, but this website’s review noted that “the usual scifi enshrined rules are all thrown out of the window in this film,” but the result remains “primarily a scifi movie [that is] genuinely compelling.”

Judas Kiss is an endearing movie about being given a second chance, not only for a better life, but becoming a better person and being with your true love. … On the whole, Judas Kiss is well paced and imaginative. I did find myself enjoying the simplicity and honesty of the story.

PERFORMANCES The review praised the performances of Charlie David (“good”), Richard Harmon (who tackles a demanding role “with ease”) and Sean Paul Lockhart (AKA Brent Corrigan) (“very believable and understated” performance).

In its announcement of the film’s upcoming U.K. DVD release, [U.S. purchase information here] the website described it as ”a truly original gay feature [that] mixes fantasy and reality with verve. … [The] award-winning Judas Kiss is a fresh, entertaining and intelligent drama.”

Notably, this review was the only one to note some Easter eggs in the film that give hints about the story.

Finally, the review wound up with this praise: “It also proves that you don’t need a big budget to make an engaging sci-fi movie. It is a movie that will stay with you.”

THE AUSTIN, Texas-based film website, Slackerwood, hauled out the adjectives for its genre-busting review of Judas Kiss at the Austin Gay and Lesbian International Film Festival.

The review, penned by Mike Saulters, noted the tonal similarity with a past festival favorite:

Drawing from The Twilight Zone, Judas Kiss was equal parts drama and mystery with an air of magic that brought to mind previous festival hit Were the World Mine.

JUDAS KISS was shown at a special brunch screening attended by cast members Richard Harmon and Sean Paul Lockhart (aka Brent Corrigan), whom Saulters noted stayed through the afternoon meeting with festival-goers. The castmates joined director J.T. Tepnapa and writer-producer Carlos Pedraza for the Q&A session following the film.

In addition to his contributions to Slackerwood, writer Mark Saulters has contributed scores of reviews for Ain’t It Cool News, writing under the nom-de-clavier Augustus Gloop, including festival coverage for the Austin Film Festival, SXSW and Fantastic Fest. The Slackerwood website is devoted to reporting and reviewing all aspects of Austin’s growing film communities.

Louisville International Fest Puts ‘Judas Kiss’ On the Edge Oct. 8

ON THE EDGE Judas Kiss was named to the list of films On the Edge to be screened during the Third Annual Louisville International Festival of Film, scheduled to run October 5-9.

“It’s an honor to be one of only five films chosen for the festival’s On the Edge category,” said the film’s writer and producer, Carlos Pedraza. ”LIFF is committed to screening artistic films not usually presented through commercial venues, giving independent filmmakers like us a place to showcase our work.”

Director J.T. Tepnapa added, “We are excited that this festival will give a mainstream audience the chance to explore the film’s universal themes.”

TICKETS Judas Kiss will screen on Saturday, October 8, at 2 p.m. in the Nunn Room at the festival’s Galt House venue. Tickets are on sale now at the LIFF website.

Besides On the Edge, the fest’s other categories are Documentary Features, Documentary Shorts, Feature Films and Short Films. LIFF screens more than 60 films from around the world. In addition to Judas Kiss, the other films On the Edge are:

This film is a feature-length abstract music/video ritual of thanksgiving that follows the structure of rituals of gratitude celebrated throughout the ages and across cultures and religions.

New Mexico Festival to Screen ‘Judas Kiss’

THE SOUTHWEST Gay and Lesbian Film Festival features Judas Kiss next month at their ninth annual event, which runs from October 7-13 in Albuquerque, N.M.

Judas Kiss is scheduled to screen on Wednesday, October 12, at 8 p.m. (exact time and venue to be announced).

The Southwest Gay and Lesbian Film Festival (SWGLFF) will run for seven days and screen more than 75 features, shorts and documentaries in over 40 programs, representing countries from all over the world, while hosting an array of guests and filmmakers, creating a truly regional experience.

One of the New Mexico’s largest film festivals, Closet Cinema is recognized as the New Mexico’s leading GLBT non-profit organization dedicated to presenting a diverse array of GLBT images through film media arts.

SWGLFF plans to host a variety of festival events, attended by members of the film industry, sponsors, media and the general public.

Best Screenwriting Award – San Diego FilmOut Festival

SAN DIEGO — Judas Kiss writer Carlos Pedraza and director J.T. Tepnapa won the Best Screenwriting Award at last month’s San Diego FilmOut, the festival announced today.

“J.T. and I are so grateful to FilmOut for this award,” Pedraza said, “and to our amazing cast and crew who brought our story to such vivid life.”

Awards at the festival are juried by the festival’s programming committee and board of directors. Judas Kiss had the coveted Boys’ Centerpiece slot on FilmOut’s opening weekend, where it screened on August 20, with Pedraza, Tepnapa and a large number of cast and crew on hand, including San Diego’s own Sean Paul Lockhart (aka Brent Corrigan), who plays film student Chris Wachowsky.

According to San Diego Gay and Lesbian News, Judas Kiss was one of the festival’s “big draws.”

Tepnapa’s previous films have screened at FilmOut in the past. Judas Kiss is the director’s and the two writers’ first feature-length effort.

Other features bringing home awards from San Diego include The Green (Best Narrative Feature), You Should Meet My Son (Audience Award, Best Narrative Feature), Gun Hill Road (trans actress Harmony Santana, Freedom Award) and Eloise’s Lover (director Jesus Garay, Outstanding Artistic Achievement).
