‘Judas Kiss’ Named to Top 10 List

JUDAS KISS was named to Entertainment Focus’ list of Top 10 Gay Films of 2011.

The British entertainment news site described the film as a “drama mixed with sci-fi for a unique and refreshing gay cinema experience.”

Writer Pip Ellwood compiled the list from DVD releases of gay films this year. “2011 has been a strong year for gay cinema with more quality movies being released than ever before,” he wrote.

Entertainment Focus reviewed Judas Kiss when it was released in November in the United Kingdom, calling the film ”a strong movie that tries something new in the LGBT genre. With all round good performances, an intriguing and strong storyline, and a satisfactory resolution, the movie really surprised us.”

IN ITS first week of release on DVD in the United States and Canada, the “bewitching Judas Kiss” made No. 1 on The Advocate’s Hot Sheet, the top 10 entertainment highlights by Brandon Voss.

Judas Kiss was the first of four “film fest faves” recently released on DVD, Voss wrote:

DVD: Judas Kiss, Unhappy Birthday, Eating Out: Drama Camp, and Gigola. Take home these LGBT film fest faves: In J.T. Tepnapa’s bewitching Judas Kiss, out Dante’s Cove star Charlie David plays a filmmaker sucked into a weird love quadrangle with gay stars Timo Descamps and Brent Corrigan; a gay couple gets a scary surprise in the British Unhappy Birthday; Q. Allan Brocka’s fourth Eating Out gets campier; and Laure Charpentier’s French-language Gigola plumbs the lesbian underbelly of ’60s Paris.

EARLY SALES Released on DVD and video on demand on October 25, Judas Kiss is at or near the top of the sales charts at many retail outlets in its category, including Amazon.com, Wolfe Video, TLA Video, Amazon.co.uk in England and Barnes & Noble, and is proving very popular on Netflix’s DVD service, as well.

VIDEO ON DEMAND Judas Kiss also became available this week on many cable and satellite systems’ video on demand service, especially the two largest cable providers, xfinity (Comcast) and Time Warner. The film also became available on Amazon Instant Video for sale and rent.

TOP 10 LIST Meanwhile, Judas Kiss also hit the top of the list of gay videos on dot429 Magazine this week. dot429 is a professional network for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community and its allies. Earlier this fall, Edge Magazine named Judas Kiss to its Top 10 Indie Movies list, and Queerty put the film at the top of its festival list back in the spring.

Edge Magazine: ‘Judas Kiss’ Among Fall’s ‘Great Gay Indies’

IN A COVER story for its new digital magazine, Edge named Judas Kiss among the “12 Great Gay Indies That Will (Hopefully) Make it to a Theater Near You.”

The article by Bob Nesti notes:

Come fall and the mood changes in movie theaters. Summer fluff is replaced with more serious fare. … Yet for many LGBT films just getting out in that marketplace is the battle. Though many titles turn up at the LGBT film festivals right through the end of the year, many — most, actually — languish in release limbo with but a handful making it out to a theater or streaming device near you.

Nesti highlights a dozen worthy LGBT-themed efforts. Judas Kiss is No. 8. In the film’s profile, “It’s a Wondeful Life?”, Nesti quotes the review penned by the Edge Network’s Christian Cintron at this summer’s film festivals:

Judas Kiss is a deep, insightful film that explores the shadows we run from as gay men and the toxic and self-destructive decisions we can make that can change our lives.

The film “offers a different take on the cliché time travel idea of ‘If I could only go back,’” Nesti states, and reminds readers the DVD is released in North America on October 25.

James Franco takes on another gay role in The Broken Tower, a biopic about gay Jazz Age poet Hart Crane.

August, a sexy melodrama about a three-way relationship.
Rent Boys, a haunting documentary about gay hustlers in Berlin.
Rob Williams’ sequel to his holiday comedy, Make the Yuletide Gay 2.
Codependent Lesbian Space Aliens Seek Same, which pretty much describes itself.

OTHER WORTHY films named in the preview include: Mangus, a musical comedy about a disabled man who wants to play Jesus in a pageant; Hollywood to Dollywood, a documentary about twin gay brothers on a pilgrimage to meet their idol, Dolly Parton; Buffering, a British comedy about a gay couple who turn to porn to rescue their finances; Going Down in La-La Land, Casper Andreas’ dark comedy about a young gay actor who turns to porn; the Carol Channing documentary, Larger Than Life, and the mockumentary Varla Jean Merman and the Mushroomheads, starring the eponymous drag legend.
