AfterElton Debate Spreads to Airlock Alpha

AfterElton’s review of Judas Kiss, critical of the seeming lack of rules about the story’s magical realism, has sparked a rebuttal from the science fiction website Airlock Alpha, which asks, “Does It Always Have To Make Sense?

The article, part of Airlock Alpha’s “SciFriday” column by Michael Hinman, takes aim at this week’s review by AfterElton movie critic Brent Hartinger, who praised the film’s attempt at magical realism but found fault with its lack of explicit rules to explain its apparent time-travel elements.

Hartinger’s review also prompted another view of the film from fellow AfterElton columnist Ed Kennedy, who found the story intriguing and the performances compelling. Beware, the discussion at AfterElton’s comment section, and Hartinger’s review itself, is riddled with spoilers about key plot twists.

IN HIS SPOILER-FREE SciFriday article, Hinman acknowledges that the time-bending nature of Judas Kiss “is not necessarily explained, and is not really done along the conventional lines we’re used to seeing in franchises like Star Trek and Stargate. Because no one stops the film to explain what’s going on, there is not a lot of understanding of the ‘magical’ construct of Judas Kiss, and that made it hard for [Hartinger] to fully enjoy the film.

“But seriously,” Hinman asks, “so we really have to have everything explained to us? Do we want to have everything explained to us? … When we eat a hot dog, we don’t take the time to figure out how the hot dog was created and presented to us. We just squirt some ketchup and mustard on it, and that’s that.”
